Whiffer Golf Rules

Whiffer Golf is played just like golf — but no putter.

You’ll use one oversized club to hit a large whiffle ball into each hole (bucket) in the fewest strokes possible.

Quick idea: You can play it serious or silly — both are legit.

  • Goal: Get the whiffle ball into each hole with the fewest strokes.
  • Equipment: One specified oversized club per player (no switching mid-hole unless your group agrees).

No putter: When you’re close to the hole, you can chip or “putt” with your club.

Before you start, decide how your group wants to count the ball “in”:

Option A — Must Stay In:

The ball must go into the bucket AND stay in to finish the hole.

Option B — Bounce-Out Counts:

The ball must go into the bucket, but no penalty if it pops back out.

Option C — “Swish” Bonus (Optional + Fun):

  • If you chip it clean into the bucket without touching the sides (like a basketball swish), you can subtract 1 stroke from your score for that hole.

Flagstick contact is allowed and still counts as a swish if it doesn’t hit the sides.

Teeing Off

Each hole starts at the tee area. Place the ball on a tee and hit toward the hole.

Fairway Shots

After your tee shot, keep hitting from where your ball lands until you’re near the hole.

“On the Green” = Chip/Putt with Your Club

  • Once you’re close, you can chip in or roll it in using your club.

No putters — just your club. **Note: You can use your club as a putter to putt the ball in or chip in.

  • Count every swing as one stroke.

Add up your strokes for all holes — lowest total wins.

Par + Golf Terms (Optional)

Each hole has a par (the number of strokes a strong golfer is expected to take). You can score:

  • Eagle: 2 under par (-2)
  • Birdie: 1 under par (-1)
  • Par: even (0)
  • Bogey: 1 over par (+1)

Double Bogey: 2 over par (+2)

(If you don’t want “par rules,” skip them and just play lowest strokes wins.)

Whiffer Golf is fun, but we still keep it respectful and safe:

  • Be aware of other groups — don’t hit if someone is in front of you.
  • Keep pace — if you’re stuck, pick up your ball and move to the next hole.
  • Play fair + honest — count real strokes and keep it friendly.

Respect the course + other players — no roughhousing near tees or holes.

  • Kids 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

For kids over 10, we ask parents to keep an eye on them so Whiffer stays safe and fun for everyone.

Regular golf the lowest score at the end wins. Chipping a ball into a bucket subtracts one stroke for that hole.

If you win the hole you get 1 point, if you tie a hole nothing happens. Most points at the end wins.

The lowest score on each hole gets a skin, if there's a tie for the lowest the skin is carried over to the next hole which is now worth 2 skins.

Each hole is worth 9 points, 1st place gets 5 points, 2nd place gets 3, 3rd place gets 1.  If two golfers tie a position they split the points from those 2 places. Most points at the end wins.

Play 2v2 where your team has to alternate hitting shots in either stroke or match play format.

Play 2v2 where everyone plays their own ball and the best score for your team at the end of each hole counts, can be played stroke or match play.

Whiffer Golf CrAzY pLaY

Add Crazy Play to Whiffer Golf for an extra laugh — each hole has a quick, silly rule

(dizzy spins, dance-offs, sound effects, and more).
Totally optional, family-friendly, and designed to keep the game moving while making the round even more fun.

Spin 3 times with forehead on club handle, then hit immediately.

Call your shot like live sports commentary every time.

High-five someone before you swing or take +1.

Pep talk your ball like a coach before the first shot.

5 seconds of air guitar before your tee shot.

Make a goofy sound every time you swing. Forget once: +1.

Final shot must be cue-stick style with your club.

Opponent gives one command before each swing. Follow it or +1.

Final shot eyes closed. No peeking.

Opponent chooses your dance. Big effort required.

Count down 5…4…3…2…1… and hit on “1.” Miss the timing = +1 stroke.

Say “Yeehaw!” and tip an imaginary cowboy hat before you hit. Forget = +1 stroke.

Every shot is one-hand only. Two hands = +1 stroke.

Compliment another player before every swing.

Freeze 5 seconds like a statue before tee shot.

Strike a victory pose before your last shot. Miss = dramatic collapse.

Every shot standing on one foot. Other foot touches down = +1 stroke.

Winner of Hole 17 chooses a safe, fast challenge for everyone on 18.

Do 3 big chicken flaps and one loud “BOK BOK” before you swing.

Sneak up to the ball in slow motion like a ninja, then hit. If you laugh and break character = +1 stroke.

Keep your elbows tucked like tiny T-Rex arms on every swing. If you “normal swing” = +1 stroke.

Spin an imaginary lasso overhead for 3 seconds, then hit. Forget = +1 stroke.

Say your name + the hole number out loud (“Corey, Hole 7!”) then hit. Forget = +1 stroke.
